Masham’s Peculier Creative Connections – who would have thought such a small town in Wensleydale could have been the muse for so many artists and film sets over

Ken Loach
Later in 1979 he returned to film Black Jack in Masham Market Place, turning our peaceful Yorkshire town into a bustling 18th-century fairground. Locals were cast as extras, and children from the area were given parts, in true Loach style. Market stalls, costumed performers, and livestock transformed the square—at one point, a group of goats reportedly broke loose and wandered into a nearby shop. Loach’s preference for natural light and unpolished acting gave the scenes a raw, authentic feel. The filming disrupted Masham’s daily life in the most memorable way, leaving behind tales of geese chases and movie magic in the marketplace.
