Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal

Stunning monastic ruins and a breathtaking Georgian water garden, spectacular views and serene landscapes.

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal – put this wonderful UNESCO World Heritage Site at the top of your visiting list! The ruins of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden make for an awe-inspiring excursion.

The ruins at Fountains Abbey are the largest monastic ruins in the country. Studley Royal Water Garden is the result of the work of John and William Aislabie’s vision to transform the wooded valley of the River Skell, right next door to the Abbey, into one of England’s most spectacular Georgian water gardens.

When the Aislabies also acquired the Abbey ruins, the ‘Surprise View’ was born – a breath-taking vista created for garden visitors that still wows visitors to Fountains today.

The site is managed by the National Trust.
