Norton Conyers House and Gardens

This historic manor features stunning gardens and a rich literary connection, inspiring Brontë's works. It's open to visitors for a limited time each year.

Norton Conyers House and Gardens is a late medieval manor house with Stuart and Georgian additions that has been in the Graham family since 1624. Located just outside Ripon, it is a must for any Brontë fans.

In 1839 Charlotte Brontë visited Norton Conyers and heard the legend of a mad woman confined in the attics in the previous century, it is said to have given her the idea for the mad Mrs Rochester in ‘Jane Eyre’, and the house itself many ideas for ‘Thornfield Hall’.

The house has undergone extensive restoration and house and gardens are open to the public for 28 days a year. Please check the website.
