Middleham Castle

Middleham Castle

This historic castle features a massive Norman tower and stunning views of the Dales, offering a captivating exploration of its extensive ruins.

Middleham Castle, pictured above courtesy of English Heritage, was Richard III’s childhood home and is a short drive north of Masham in Middleham.

The original core was its Norman great tower, one of the largest in the country, but the castle was further developed under the powerful Nevilles, into a residence that dominates the surrounding Dales countryside with commanding views of Lower Wensleydale.

Although roofless, extensive remains of the fortified castle still survive, making it a fascinating castle to explore.

The site is managed by English Heritage.
